How to Wear Spring’s Bermuda Shorts Trend

17 Apr

I was so glad to find that bermuda shorts are one of this Spring’s style trends. I bought these white ones from H&M last summer on clearance, but its one of those items that once i had it home i was not sure how to wear. I think i might have worn them once and then they got relegated to the bottom of my drawer.

As soon as i saw this inspiration outfit on Polyvore i saved it to my Pinterest account. I finally found an interesting way to wear my shorts! You guys know that i love outfits that mix styles and this outfit is no different, combining the sleek silk fuchsia top with the casual denim bermuda shorts. Its a home run in my book!

Are you into Spring’s bermuda shorts trend, or do you still prefer a short short?

Knit Pick

I swear i have the best friends ever! I was recently invited by a good friend of mine to attend an event hosted by Citibank and House Beautiful where interior designers had the chance to decorate empty apartments in a newly constructed building. As guests, we were able to explore the apartments and get up close and personal with the beautiful items used, while snacking on some delish drinks and appetizers created by mixologists and chefs specifically for this event. All of the apartments looked like scenes for an upcoming issue of House Beautiful, which i think was the idea. It was truly inspiring the see all that good design in person. But the benefits of attending this event don’t end there…no siree. When we got our coats from the coat check an extremely heavy goodie bag was handed over with them that contained none else but the March issue of one of my favorite fashion magazines, Marie Claire. It was the treasure trove of inspiration i expected it to be. Today’s inspiration comes from their 101 Ideas column which was chock full of ideas for wearing Spring trends. Not surprisingly, i was drawn to all the knit items on this page…seeing as i love to crochet and all, and also not surprising is that i had the perfect knit top to rock for the shoot.

It’s Electric

13 Mar

Blog Inspiration Photos

My friends and i recently had a clothing swap where i acquired the green striped button up that i’m wearing in today’s photos. As times have gotten harder financially, and we’ve grown older and wiser, we’ve become more interested in finding ways that we can spend time together without spending a fortune. Admittedly in our younger years one of our favorite pass times was “window shopping”, and the reason i put that in quotation marks is because we rarely only looked at clothes from the windows. We were more likely to spend way more than our budgets allowed on impromptu shopping sprees. I’ve benefitted quite a bit from our new found interest. Quite a few of the pieces i’ve styled for the blog have come from clothing swaps, and friend’s no-longer-want piles, like the shirt in this post and the short sleeve sweater in this post. If you and your friends are looking for creative ways to add new pieces to your closets and save money all at once, i highly recommend doing clothing swaps! You can even take them one step further by timing them with each season.

This bright green J Crew button up truly came just in time for me. Turns out electric colors are right on trend for Spring 2013. I paired it with a navy cable knit sweater from Gap, Mossimo boyfriend jeans from Target, nude Dolce Vita pumps via Marshall’s, and tiny shoulder bag from Zara. The gorgeous necklace is Amrita Singh via Gilt.com.

Are you inspired to plan a clothing swap with your friends? If you do, come back and share all your great finds!

I loved working on the last two DIY posts, and i’m looking forward to posting more DIY on here, but working on today’s outfit post just felt like a homecoming. So without further ado…today’s outfit post.

I’ve been noticing a lot fashionistas rocking oversized sweaters. All of the inspiration photos below are from Pinterest.

They look so cute and comfy and i wanted one of my very one, so I kept my eyes peeled for one to buy that wouldn’t be too expensive. Well recently i took a trip to a discount store near my job called Lot Less and what should i find but the most amazing oversized gold sweater by Anne Klein. The original price tag on the Anne Klein online store is $119 and i bought it for a whopping $14.99, not bad huh? I love how versatile it is, i’ll be able to wear it more casually during the day say with some jeans and flats or by night the way i’ve styled it for the post. The leggings are from Zara (similar) and the booties are Calvin Klein…two Kleins in one outfit!

What do you think of oversized sweaters? Are you as in love with them as i am?

New Feature: The Shop Your Closet Challenge

6 Feb

I have been thinking about adding a new feature to this blog for a while, and i have finally come up with a concept! I wanted to do something that would be in line with the theme of the blog but that would also solicit the input of my readers. In came The Shop Your Closet Challenge.

The intent is that on a monthly basis i would feature someone new. Here are the requirements:
  • Select 1 to 3 inspiration outfits that you will recreate. They can be from anywhere you find them, be it magazines, blogs, pinterest, store windows, etc..
  • Recreate the looks using what you already own. Sound familiar? yes, its what i do here on the blog! The looks don’t have to be the exact same as their inspiration outfits (if you read my blog you know that my outfits are not always exactly the same as the inspirations) but you should be able to tell what inspired you about it. For example, maybe you’re recreating a trend you saw on a trend article, like 2012’s brocade trend, or a particular color combination.
  • Send me pictures of the inspiration outfits and their sources (i.e. links if from the web, magazine name and edition, etc…). Send pictures of you in your outfits. Send a paragraph or two  explaining how you felt about the challenge, what you gained from it (if anything) and what inspired you to pick those outfits.

Simple as that! I think this will be a fun feature and i’m looking forward to seeing what you put together!

…but first, to get your inspiration going, i’ve asked my dear friend (and Editor in Chief of the blog 4 All The Single Ladees) Hope Salley to be my first participant.

Coral’s Inspirations: How did you feel about the challenge, what did you gain from it (if anything) and what inspired you to pick those outfits?
Hope Salley: The Shop Your Closet Challenge allowed me to do something that I’m always scared to do when it comes to fashion – step outside of my box and try something new! I’ve always been worried about putting certain textures and colors together, like celebrities and runway models do, without looking horrible. This challenge gave me the opportunity to do that and realize that I really do have the potential to experiement with fashion that’s in my own closet and actually be successful at putting together a hot outfit!

I loved how the dresses and coats from Rachel Zoe’s collection from New York Fashion Week last year provided movement, and the layering of clothing with multiple pieces, and pop of blue and fuchsia just did it for me. Sass & Bide’s collection from this year’s London Fashion Week is more on the sophisticated side, offering a little sleek, a little sexy and lots of sass. Similar to Rachel Zoe’s collection, I was pleased to see the flow of movement provided by feathered and sheer skirts. Black is and will forever be classy in my eyes, but the silver and white accented intricate designs gave the look lots of personality.

I think Hope did a fantastic job of recreating her inspiration looks, what do you think? Let me know in the Comments! and if you are interested in participating please send me a note to CoralsInspirations {at} gmail {dot} com.

Tiered Dress

Inspiration Outfit

Hi there!

So a while back as i dug through racks and racks of sale items at H&M i found the prettiest tiered dress, and it was only $5 so you know i had to get it right? Well i did, and i wore it to a friends birthday party….and then it never saw the light of day again. Sad, sad indeed that such a pretty little thang would have to stay hidden in my closet. Well today’s inspiration comes from the blog Girl Necessities and gave me the perfect excuse to bring it out of the dark. As usual, i love the combination of styles. In this case girlie with rugged.

The day of the shoot it was beyond cold in the streets of NYC so i finally caved and decided to do the shoot indoors. I picked a spot as free of clutter and close to a window as possible take advantage of the natural light  and to let the outfit shine. I quite liked how it turned out. What are some of your favorite spots to take pictures?

Pretty in Purple

While browsing through Pinterest this photo popped out at me. I absolutely love the depth that layering gives an outfit. I also love the particularly boho chic-ness of this outfit. Not to mention i had pieces to pull off a similar look. I decided to wear a purple striped Uniqlo button up to reflect the bold and crisp nature of the plaid button up in the photo. Then to emulate the monochromatic aspect of the outfit i decided to wear a grey bowler hat that i got off an NYC street vendor and a long grey pocketed American Rag sweatshirt that i inherited from a friend. Lastly, i finished the outfit with some black tights and black Steve Madden boots. It would’ve been cool to have been able to finish the monochromatic look with grey boots, but black is what i have so black is what i wore! How lucky was i that the sky decided to coordinate colors with me too!
