Today’s outfit post was inspired by Earth Day (and this Polyvore set), which just passed a couple of days ago on April 22nd.¬†The¬†pictures were taken at my friend’s building’s green roof. They are growing all sorts of wonderful veggies up there and when they are ready to be picked they will be distributed amongst residents and others interested in taking part¬†in their share program.¬†Pretty cool for a building in the middle of NYC, huh?¬†So how can we do our little parts in helping to protect and preserve this wonderful planet of ours? Some things i already do are:

  • Carry¬†a reusable water bottle instead of buying disposable bottles of water .
  • Bring my lunch to work in reusable tupperware.¬†I save so much money by bringing my lunch and coffee/tea to work, its actually one of the tips i often give my clients that i advice financially.
  • Take part in clothing swaps. My readers will already know that this is one of my favorite ways to save money on clothing, but it’s also good for the environment because it keeps good clothing out of land fills.

But, speaking of clothing and textiles, did you know that those should be recycled too?! For some reason this is one thing i had not thougth to do before. We all know that recycling bottles and news papers is a great way to protect our environment and are pretty familiar with how to do it, but i find that clothing and textiles are not as easy to know what to do with. So for my 5th simple way to help protect our environment, which i will have to start to do too:

  • Find a clothing and textiles recycling program near you. According the non-profit organization GrowNYC  ļNYC residents discard 193,000 tons of textiles every year. ļ And thats only one city! GrowNYC has a clothing and textiles recycling program, and according to them these items are either donated to be reused if it’s in good condition, or it is sold to be reincarnated into a plethora of things, such as rags.

So what are some ways you take care of our lil’ ol space in space?

Tiered Dress

Inspiration Outfit

Hi there!

So a while back as i dug through racks and racks of sale items at H&M i found the prettiest tiered dress, and it was only $5 so you know i had to get it right? Well i did, and i wore it to a friends birthday party….and then it never saw the light of day again. Sad, sad indeed that such a pretty little thang would have to stay hidden in my closet. Well today’s inspiration comes from the blog Girl Necessities and gave me the perfect excuse to bring it out of the dark. As usual, i love the combination of styles. In this case girlie with rugged.

The day of the shoot it was beyond cold in the streets of NYC so i finally caved and decided to do the shoot indoors. I picked a spot as free of clutter and close to a window as possible take advantage of the natural light  and to let the outfit shine. I quite liked how it turned out. What are some of your favorite spots to take pictures?

Pretty in Purple

Inspiration Outfit

While browsing through Pinterest this photo popped out at me. I absolutely love the depth that layering gives an outfit. I also love the particularly boho chic-ness of this outfit. Not to mention i had pieces to pull off a similar look. I decided to wear a purple striped Uniqlo button up to reflect the bold and crisp nature of the plaid button up in the photo. Then to emulate the monochromatic aspect of the outfit i decided to wear a grey bowler hat that i got off an NYC street vendor and a long grey pocketed American Rag sweatshirt that i inherited from a friend. Lastly, i finished the outfit with some black tights and black Steve Madden boots. It would’ve been cool to have been able to finish the monochromatic look with grey boots, but black is what i have so black is what i wore! How lucky was i that the sky decided to coordinate colors with me too!

Ginger Pinks

21 Nov

This week i teamed up with the talented Janese Castro, mastermind behind the online accessories store Ginger Pinks. If you take a look at some of my previous posts you’ll notice i don’t often accesorize. That is for two reasons, 1. i own a limited amount of cool accessories, 2. I’m not always sure what will look good with what. Enter Janese with her amazing talent for picking beautiful, cool jewels that work perfectly with an outfit.¬†When she laid all the beautiful pieces she’d brought¬†out on my dining table i felt like a kid in a candy store:

Jewels: Ginger Pinks

Here are some of my favorites up close and personal:

We had quite a good time trying on jewels before the shoot.

I dont think i would’ve ever paired such girlie items like the krystal necklace and bracelet with the chunkier and colorful bangles, but once i had them on they worked! I fell in love ‚̧

I feel blessed to have such talented and resourceful people in my life. You may be surprised at just how willing people are to help you look great. So next time you have a style conundrum, all it may take is a browse through your contacts and phone call.

Sandy Almost Ruined My Halloween…Almost

2 Nov

I usually try to post something new every Wednesday, unfortunately this week Hurricane Sandy came through town and threw my plans off course. I’ve lived in New York City practically all my life and have never experienced a natural disaster quite like this, it almost made me feel like it could never happen here. It is truly a surreal feeling.

Luckily, since Halloween fell on a Wednesday this year my friend Maribel held her annual Halloween party the weekend before the storm. I was a pirate. Classic!

As usual, i was scrambling at the last minute to put something together and happened to have all the pieces in my closet already!

What i wore:

Old Navy¬†Vest (i’ve had this for years! similar one)

American Apparel Leggings

Ralph Lauren Blouse bought at El Mundo (similar)

Dolce Vita Riding Boots bought at Daffy’s for like $80 (similar)

Scarf c/o my momma

Sword from another pirate costume i own

…and here’s a link to the awesome YouTube video i used for the make up

Did you DIY your costume this year? Share your photos and/or links!

Why does the approach of Halloween make me want to speak like a pirate?? I even went as far as looking up how to say ‚Äúhi there friend‚ÄĚ in a pirate dictionary for this post. I‚Äôve only ever dressed up as a pirate once, promise! Most other years I‚Äôve strategically used pieces in my wardrobe, and my infamous hat that I‚Äôve owed for something like 10 years, to be a witch.¬†This strategy is definitely good on the pockets, but not very fun. Luckily I have friends that are much more creative than that! For today‚Äôs post I interviewed my dear friend and fellow fashionista, Mariel Abreu, on the DIY crow costume that she wore¬†2 years ago. She did an awesome job and looked abso-crow-lutely stunning! (I know I can be a cornball sometimes).

CORAL’S INSPIRATIONS: When did you first come across Heidi‚Äôs crow costume and what did you like about it?

MARIEL ABREU: I came across Heidi’s Costume while chatting with a girlfriend and browsing the internet. My girlfriend mentioned she loves Heidis yearly costumes and I should take a look. When I saw the Crow costume I immediately fell in love.

CORAL’S INSPIRATIONS: What inspired you to create your own costume instead of buying one?

MARIEL ABREU: I initially searched to buy a crow costume but what I found was nothing close to Heidi’s. I then set myself up to try and assemble it myself. Didn’t know where to begin.

CORAL’S INSPIRATIONS: Where did you source the materials for the costume? How long did it take to create?

MARIEL ABREU: I sourced out my materials from the garment district in NYC. I figured there I would be able to find all sorts of feathers and fabrics to help me create this costume. I browsed the neighborhood and showed vendors my picture for directions on where feather shops were located. I also researched a bit in the internet. I took me about a week to gather all of my supplies. The costume took me approximately 3 hour or so to put together. It was surprisingly easy.

CORAL’S INSPIRATIONS: Would you say you saved some mula by creating it yourself? How much did you end up spending on it?

MARIEL ABREU: I sure did save some money as I’m sure a custom costume like that would range over the 300 dollar range. I ended up spending aprox 100 dollars in feathers. News to me, feathers are very expensive.

CORAL’S INSPIRATIONS: Would you do it again?

MARIEL ABREU: Absolutely! It was fun, creative and I was the highlight of the Halloween party I attended that year.

CORAL’S INSPIRATIONS: Do you know what you want to be this year? Will you be making your own costume again?

MARIEL ABREU: Not sure yet what I want to be this year but once you venture into creating a unique costume you don’t want to go back. I have been creating my own costume ever since I started to create the crow.

Have we you inspired to try something new and/or DYI this year?
